Write an eBook - Make Money

"I want to write an eBook and make some money," my earnest writer, Nancy, said to me. She heard that eBooks make money and she wanted to use this easy method rather than write a traditional book that takes much longer to publish.

There are thousands of articles on the Internet that show you how to write an eBook, but very few that tell you what you need to do to market and sell your eBook online.

Writing the eBook is the easy part. There are many other things that need to be done to sell your eBook. Listed below are some of the basic activities that need to be done so that people will come to your Website and buy your eBook and you will make money. If you don't know what some of the terms I mention below mean, then start searching the Internet for these words and buy an eBook that covers this information.

1. Do your research
Before you begin writing, do your research. Research your area of expertise and determine if your eBook is likely to be profitable. Do an Internet search for your topic and see what eBooks are out there on your subject. Check out the prices. Soon you will know how to write an eBook with your niche that will sell.

2. Build a website that attracts traffic
First you have to have a place to sell your eBook. It must be traffic rich with keywords that attract a targeted traffic -- people who already are looking for the type of eBook you have to offer. Build your keyword rich Website and the Internet surfers will come and visit you.

3. Build your list
Collect business cards at networking and speaking events. Add the names and email addresses to your autoresponder. Drive traffic to your Website by writing eZine articles on your subject and sending them to eZine article services. Offer a free report if they sign up for your newsletter which you will send to them once or twice a month. Oh yes, you have to get an autoresponder service to collect your names. Do an Internet search for "autoresponder" and you will find several services that offer this.

4. Write a sales page
Start looking at Websites that offer an eBook similar to yours. Check out their promotional sales letter. Would you buy the product based on their sales letter? If yes, then write a sales letter similar to theirs, but don't copy word for word. Create your own exciting copy that will make people want to buy your eBook.

5. A Paypal account with a Paypal button on your sales page
Start with a Paypal account to use to sell your book and make money. Later, when your sales are bigger and you have more than one product to sell on your site you can sign up for a commercial credit card account.

6. Promote your book in forums, blogs, and social networking sites
On blogs and forums everytime you make a comment include your name, eBook title and Web address if possible. Sign up for Facebook, Linkedin and other social networking sites to promote your book and direct people to your site. Include a chapter, or part of one, on your networking sites to give people a taste of the eBook. There are eBook directories that can help promote your eBook.

7. Write articles for article directories
Writing articles of 600-1000 words and sending them to eZine article services is a good way to get people to come to your site. Check out the site EzineArticles as they have good articles on how to use them and the guidelines are similar for other services. This gets your name and Website address out there in Internet world and some people will come to your site and sign up for your eZine. Then you will have more names added to your list.

8. Joint Ventures
Team up with other eBook authors to cross promote each other's eBooks. Promise to send referrals to each other and recommend each other's products. It may be difficult at first if you don't have a large list of names, but give it a try. If it is a good eBook partners may be interested in promoting your book for a 40-50% commission.

Selling your eBook takes weeks or months of work. Begin doing these activities while you are writing your eBook. Don't wait until it is finished. Wouldn't it be nice if you already had a built in list of names to announce your new eBook to? This can happen if you have been steadily acquiring business cards and adding them to your list. Plus get signups for the eZine (online newsletter) that you promised your subscribers you would send out once or twice a month.

Get started writing and submitting articles, building your website, building your list, creating your sales copy, posting to your blog, and getting joint venture experts to promote and sell your eBook.

Little did Nancy know that selling an eBook would take lots work. But if she takes some baby steps every day she will get it done in her own time, and so will you.

How To Market Your Business With An Ebook

Less expensive than producing a "traditional" book, electronic books (or "eBooks") exist in various formats, including MS Word files, Adobe Acrobat pdf files (one of the most popular formats) and HTML files (which can be read using a web browser). Readers can download your eBook from your website, a third-party site (such as Amazon.com), or receive it as an email attachment. If you choose to create your eBook using HTML files, all you need to do is give your readers the URL so that they can view it like any other webpage.

Looking to promote your products or services? Consider using an eBook in your promotions. For instance, a caterer might offer books such as "Entertaining for Large Parties at a Small Cost" or "Perfect Wine Pairings" and distribute them to prospective clients. She could also reformat the content into individual articles and submit them to specialized publications. An organizer might select topics such as "How to Set up a Home Office" or "10 Steps to Eliminating Clutter." She could feature these books on her website and create passive income by setting a fee for downloads. Someone opening a coffee shop might market her business with titles such as "How to Brew the Perfect Cup" or a "Guide to Global Coffees."

Want to define yourself as an expert in your field? Use an eBook to share your expertise. A house painter who finds that he's always being asked about painting might write books such as, "10 Things to Know before Hiring a Painter" or "Three Top Painting Techniques." He could market these books on his website, and offer them when meeting with prospective clients. Perhaps each month or quarter he could make a new book available for download or sale. He can market himself as an expert, while creating an additional source of income. Even do-it-yourself painters could benefit from his tips!

Have a group of articles you've already written? Compile your articles into an eBook, with each article as a separate chapter. Use your eBook as a manual for classes or talks that you give. Distribute your eBook as a "textbook" for your online classes. Are you involved in coaching or mentoring? Make your eBook available on your site as a download for your clients or students. Need to create instructions for a product you're selling? Put it into an eBook. Use your eBook as a "thank you" to clients, or as an incentive to prospective clients.
Don't underestimate the power of an eBook. You can use it for marketing, income, building writing credits or establishing yourself as an expert. Whatever your objective, use an eBook to get exposure for your business while sharing your expertise.

Utilizing Ebooks to Build Your Business

The ability to build your business with ebooks is undeniable. They take little time and effort to put together and considering the many different ways they can be used for both promotional and traffic generation purposes, this time is well worth it.

Let's examine 7 different options we have to utilize an ebook as a highly effective business building tool.

1. Offline marketing

By putting your ebook on a cd you now have an audio brochure you can use in an offline mailing campaign. An effective means of followup with any subscribers on your list. This can be used to promote your primary product line or as a means to build further creditability with members on your list.

2. Copyright

By copyrighting your material, you now have exclusive rights to this ebook allowing you to sell it. By promoting it thru your website this will create more traffic and help you build your list of contacts with whom you can market additional products to in the future.

3. Post it to your website

By doing this you have created another reason for people to visit your site. If you post it a chapter at a time, this will keep your visitors coming back allowing you additional chances to market to them.

4. Use as a giveaway

To entice visitors to subscribe to your list, fill out a survey or to purchase one of your products the ebook can be used as a free giveaway. For customers who have already made a purchase with you it can be used as a 'thank you' gift.

5. Continually update it

By keeping the information fresh thru updating, you can extend the value of the ebook for your online business purposes. You may want to circulate it as a free giveaway to gain name recognition.

6. Test marketing

By offering your ebook as a product you can use it as a test marketing tool to judge the market as to whether there's a strong enough demand for a product like it. If sales appear to be strong, you may decide to invest more time and effort into further developing your ebook. This can then be followed up with a more significant product launch.

7. Use as a series

An ebook can be broken down into several sections to be used in your auto-responder as a series of content packed emails or perhaps a free course you can offer to encourage visitors to your website. Maybe you want to use certain components of it to promote other related products.

As you can see with a little diligence and creativity your ebook can prove to have the versatility and lifespan of duct tape. By using only various components it can serve as promotional materials, by maintaining its unity, it can be sold as a product. However you choose to use it there's no ignoring the flexibility and expansion capabilities of an ebook and the advantages it offers to build your business.
